The Hobbit Poster Analysis

The Hobbit Poster Analysis

The Hobbit was a highly anticipated film when it got announced of its upcoming release, and so there were many posters to advertise it. This is one of the main ones which has the main character looking at the audience. This makes it look like he is staring right at us, and so we can see his determination and the vital role he has in the film. As it is a medium shot, which doesn't show a lot of his muscles this could reflect the fact that he doesn't use his muscles when in conflict, subverting the convention of action-adventure films where the protagonist usually has a lot of muscles and are very masculine. This means that this protagonist uses his mind and intelligence in fights.

Another aspect of the poster the audience would notice would be the character holding a small sword across his body. This shows that he does get into fights, and will have to use the sword. You can also connote that this is a very unique sword, as it is very shiny and has a pattern going up the sword. This means that if the sword is special, then the character holding it is special and it is his destiny to wield it.

An interesting part of the poster is that the character is not dressed like he is going to battle as he has got a sword, but is dressed in traditional and formal clothing, in which we can assume that he dresses like everyday. This could suggest that he is not ready for the upcoming quest he is about to embark on, and has no experience in it whatsoever.

In the background, we see a peaceful countryside, where we can infer that is where the character usually lives, however there are dark clouds in the sky which could give us an indication of something dark is going to happen in the movie and to this characters life. We can also see little bursts of light shining through the clouds, which can infer that he is the only hope of victory in the quest against the antagonist.
