The Hunger Games Poster Analysis

The Hunger Games Poster Analysis

The first striking aspect of this poster is the bird emblem on fire at the top of the poster. From this, we can assume that this emblem has an importance in the movie and maybe in particular to one of the characters. As it is on fire, this could represent that there will be fighting in the film, or that the character shown on the poster has a fire inside which gives them courage and extremely skilled at what they do, especially as the character is looking at the symbol rather than looking at the audience.

The next thing the audience would notice what we can infer is the main character, looking down a road to a building all lit up, with lights on the road leading up to the building. This could mean that this is the characters goal or destination from her quest, whether that is where she finishes safely or what she wants to destroy.  The character also has a bow in their hand, which shows their main weapon during the story, but can also give us a clue to what kind of fighter they are, someone who is not the strongest, but very skilled and accurate with their fighting.

Finally, we can see a huge crowd surrounding the character either side of them. This could suggest that the character is famous or is a celebrity of sorts. Alternatively, it could be that the crowd is excited to watch what the character is about to do, which could be fighting in an arena. This can be supported by the sentence at the top of the poster which says "The world will be watching", and so this means that the protagonist could be in a competition watched by the whole world, adding a bit of competitiveness to the story in which the audience might want to join in with. The audience would also notice multiple flags flying high up from the crowd, with what we can assume are the two main characters. The character in the centre of the poster is on the flags to the left, and there is a boy of about the same age on the other side. Now this could be the antagonist of the film who she fights or competes against, but it is more likely to be her partner or maybe even her lover in the story. This could mean that the movie subverts the convention of action films where the woman is always getting rescued by the man, as she is the one with the bow.

The Hobbit Poster Analysis

The Hobbit Poster Analysis

The Hobbit was a highly anticipated film when it got announced of its upcoming release, and so there were many posters to advertise it. This is one of the main ones which has the main character looking at the audience. This makes it look like he is staring right at us, and so we can see his determination and the vital role he has in the film. As it is a medium shot, which doesn't show a lot of his muscles this could reflect the fact that he doesn't use his muscles when in conflict, subverting the convention of action-adventure films where the protagonist usually has a lot of muscles and are very masculine. This means that this protagonist uses his mind and intelligence in fights.

Another aspect of the poster the audience would notice would be the character holding a small sword across his body. This shows that he does get into fights, and will have to use the sword. You can also connote that this is a very unique sword, as it is very shiny and has a pattern going up the sword. This means that if the sword is special, then the character holding it is special and it is his destiny to wield it.

An interesting part of the poster is that the character is not dressed like he is going to battle as he has got a sword, but is dressed in traditional and formal clothing, in which we can assume that he dresses like everyday. This could suggest that he is not ready for the upcoming quest he is about to embark on, and has no experience in it whatsoever.

In the background, we see a peaceful countryside, where we can infer that is where the character usually lives, however there are dark clouds in the sky which could give us an indication of something dark is going to happen in the movie and to this characters life. We can also see little bursts of light shining through the clouds, which can infer that he is the only hope of victory in the quest against the antagonist.

The Grey Poster Analysis

The Grey Poster Analysis

As soon as you look at this poster, you immediately see a man staring straight at you. This makes the audience feel that he is looking at them, and that he is determined to do something and is on a mission. We can also see that he has a cut on the side of his face, which could signify that he has been in a fight and so the film has a decent amount of action within it. Another thing that is also eye catching is the intense blue eyes he has. This could be a reflection that he is the good guy but he is also very good at what he does. The close-up shot of his face could also mean that he uses his head more than anything and that he is very intelligent. As the body isn't shown, it could mean he uses his head when dealing with problems and when in fights with people, as you would expect him to encounter this stuff in an action movie.

The poster has snow dropping down it, which could mean that the movie is set in a snowy environment, which can be a very dangerous and unpredictable place, perfect for action movies.

The person on the poster must be the main character, and is being played by an internationally famous actor, Liam Neeson. This would convince that it would be a good movie as he is such a prestigious actor, and is very famous for his action films.

Finally, the title, The Grey, is the biggest writing on the poster, making it stand out and is plain white with some dirt marks on it. This leaves the audience with an enigma, what is The Grey? The title is also very obscure and vague, and makes the audience question it even more, making them want to see it to find out what it means. Underneath the title, there is the caption "Live or Die on This Day!", which is a convention of a action genre as the characters are usually tasked with something that can only have two outcomes; life or death. It also means that he is got a short time to accomplish his mission, and so the film is expected to be fast-paced, a common feature of an action film. It leaves us with the enigma what is it that's a matter of life or death, and so makes the audience want to go to watch it even more to find out.

The Dark Knight Poster Analysis

The Dark Knight Poster Analysis

One of the first things the audience would notice is a giant bat symbol on fire, which is convention of an action genre. This is The Dark Knights symbol and is recognised globally, and so stands out making the audience wanting to see more of the poster and then the film. The bat being on fire could signify that the main character, Batman, is in danger or that Batman has a darker side than what fans of the fictional character initially thought. This would entice people to go watch it to find out what the new Batman is like and how he will be presented. This relates to Batman as he is generally seen as an anti-hero.

The main characters of the film are on the poster with their surnames in bold, making them stand out to persuade people to come watch the film as there are well-known actors in it. The surnames in bold is conventional of an action as characters are generally known through their surnames, for example Bond from James Bond 007.

The background image sets tone and the location without giving too much away about the film, the dark colours and smoke creates the atmosphere of an action movie.

The poster also has a caption at the top, which implies that there is a lot of chaos and anarchy in the film, another convention of an action film.

Lastly, the main aspect of the poster is the main character looking down on the audience with a building burning and crumbling behind him, which is a typical convention of an action film of a hero not looking at destruction such as explosions, which could relfect the evil behind them after defeating it. His angry and mysterious look creates an excitement to the viewer.

Avatar Poster Analysis

Avatar Poster Analysis

The first thing the audience notices when looking at the poster is a man with two faces. From this, we can make the assumption that the main character of the film is going to be the man with two faces, which could imply that this man has two personalities, or something drastic happens that changes this mans way of life and appearance. It could also be showing that behind one of the faces, the other is still inside. The man is also staring directly at the audience, which gives the audience a feel like he is just a normal human being, in which we can relate to and so the audience will feel a part of the movie when you go to see it.

We can also see two different environments at the bottom of the poster, which could give us a clue to where the film is going to be set. One of them is blue and looks full of life, which could connote that there is peace at first with the blue creatures living there life without interference. We see to the right of the of that environment that it is different, with fire and broken trees. This could reflect the sudden change in the film, that goes from peace and prosperity to war and sadness. This could be the main story of the film, making the audience want to go see it to find out what is going to happen.
