Insidious Trailer Analysis

Insidious Trailer Analysis

At the start of the trailer, we straight away see the title,, in which we can tell it is a horror. This is because the font of the title is thin, white and the letters are very tight together, with a dark red background. It is also one word and all these effects are a typical convention of a horror, making it more dark and sinister. The red background probably represents blood that is about to be spilled in the movie.

Next, we have a medium shot of what we can assume is the main character, when someone asks him if he is ready, and he replies "Yeah." This is said with a very low tone and seems to be said with some fear of what's about to happen next. This is a very good way to start the trailer of a horror as it immediately makes the audience question what is happening and why is he scared? Afterwards, we go straight to a close-up shot of a metronome ticking slowly, and carries for a while throughout the trailer. This builds up a tense atmosphere for the audience, and conforms to a typical horror genre.

As the trailer goes on, we get a slow zooming, close-up shot of the main character closing his eyes as if he is going to another world. What follows is interesting as you see many different clips of what we can assume is his family, and so this could be him thinking about the times with them before he does what he's about to do. We see a kid fall of a ladder and go into a coma, and so this could be a major clue to why he is closing his eyes. As the trailer goes on, we can become more certain it is a paranormal horror with the clips that follow; stuff is moving on it's own, the grey and cold look of the air, and mysterious shapes showing themselves. The director is clever with how he does this as he doesn't give too much away to what they look like, making the audience want to come see the film to find out what they are like.

In the final moments of the trailer, it starts to build up speed with loads of split second clips shown at once one after another. This makes a good build up to the climax of the trailer, when they finally show the title at the end. Just before the end, they show the main characters face, in which he leans over and reveals a devilish demon behind him, but it isn't shown clearly what he looks like, making the audience want to see him, and from this could suggest this demon is the main antagonist of the film, and a demon would be a very cliche antagonist of a horror. While this goes on, it will now and then show words saying "Insidious", and this just builds up the hype to the film when they finally show the title, and then making the audience wanting to see the actual film afterwards.
